It's hard to write about the culture that heavily influenced me from a viewpoint that struggles to verbalize the things that were "not right" while trying not to minimize the ideologies because my gut reaction is to be legitimately disturbed by what was normalized while my brain tries to minimize experiences and justify them by suggesting that, surely, they weren't "that bad".
I was SO indoctrinated to reject anything "secular" that even just acknowledging positive aspects of humanity not framed in religious lenses still slightly smacks of betrayal and rebellion. Not that I have any intention of listening to that line of thinking anymore, but it is a battle.
A conversation about choices and the ability to see them and make them is part of that.
You might check out “Unorthodox” on Netflix. It tracks some of the things that are cult like in religious settings. It’s not just you it seems quite pervasive.
